Catharsis
Last night.
I cooked dinner for my girlfriend and myself. She came home from a rehearsal, and we settled in to watch the election returns.
We sipped a full-bodied, spicy tempranillo,
Ate juicy, medium-rare steak, perfect roasted potatoes, steamed broccoli, insalata caprese, and Ben & Jerry’s Americone Dream,
And we watched Obama win.
Twitter, Facebook, and text messages filled the evening. Mostly, we watched NBC coverage, but we happened to be on The Daily Show when they called it, which was downright startling.
Fireworks started outside our windows.
It was a special night, and I’m very happy to have spent it as we did.
It’s nice to have a “remember where you were” milestone in our adult lives that doesn’t involve terror and destruction.
Rather than try to describe it in words…This video pretty much sums up the evening:
It’s nice to feel optimistic about something again. It’s nice to feel like we’ll have a competent, intelligent, and reasonable leader with moral values with which I agree. It’s nice to have a leader who can fucking speak English.

Sounds like an excellent night!
*I* will forever remember sitting in the basement of the Ordway with fellow choristers & supernumeraries clustered around my laptop, obsessively refreshing the electoral maps at CNN, MSNBC, MPR, and FOX News.
And being caught unawares when everyone started calling the race once the West Coast polls closed (we all figured we’d be up late after the show waiting!) — and then running to get back into costume and onstage, with a big shit-eating grin on my face.
And then, drinking amaretto and eating microwave popcorn with my friend Suzanne while we watched Obama’s speech at Grant Park. And voicing our extreme gratification that our next president is articulate and thoughtful — and SOUNDS like it.
Yay for proper grammar and usage!
Crap! I forgot to laud the fact that Americone Dream figured into your night — and watching the live Stewart/Colbert broadcast when it was called (that was my one big regret of the night, that I couldn’t watch the Fake News Hour Live Edition).
