Three Mondays in One
Yesterday was a full day.
I went to the day job until about 10:00 AM.
From there I went straight to the Playwrights’ Center to audition for a show with Workhaus Collective, which went really well.* They wanted a contemporary monologue, so I did my stand-by piece from Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things (which probably had a lot more emotional truth this time, thanks to current circumstances). Fortunately, Jeremy and Cory really liked the piece, and they found a lot of what I brought to it very relevent to the character for whom I auditioned. This was great news, since I didn’t really know anything about the play going into the audition. After having a really relaxed, interesting, and rewarding chat for about ten minutes (and discovering that these were two guys with whom I’d love to work and hang out), I hit the road once more.
I went to the uptown Lunds, but not before passing my ex-girlfriend’s car, staring at it for a while, and letting it thoroughly depress me. At Lunds, I picked up some dinner rolls for my You Can Count on Me scene that I’d be performing with Corissa that afternoon. I got back into the car, ready to find lunch before i had to meet Corissa for one final rehearsal at the Guthrie for 12:15. Unfortunately, my agent had called to switch my 4:40 PM audition time to 1:00 PM. This would severely cut into before-class rehearsal time, and I had two scenes to worry about. Oh well, better that than lose an audition.
I ended up going straight to the Guthrie to prep for my scene with Corissa. Randy showed up, and we only had time for a line-through before I had to rush to my audition (which was for Meijers grocery in-store videos). I was the only one there, so the whole audition took all of three minutes, and I raced back to the Guthrie, arriving about ten minutes early for my 1:30 class.
The first scene was from Lone Star with Randy, and it went really, really well. We didn’t quite manage the same honesty as we had in the previous night’s rehearsal, but it was still relatively successful. And hilarious.
I changed clothes and did the You Can Count on Me scene with Corissa, which was a lot weaker than many of our rehearsals, and we weren’t sure why. It just didn’t gel. We’re planning to work it more and revisit the scene on a later date.
While in class, I made arrangements to start working on a scene from Proof with Lauren, which we’re going to present on April 7th. You may remember that I was in Proof back in Louisiana in the Fall of 2003. So, hooray, I already own the script! And line memorization will be quick and easy!
At about 6:00 PM, I finally ate my first meal of the day. Taco Bell. Mmm.
From 7:30 to 10:30, I started shooting a short film project for Harry Reeder (who did Safe House for last year’s 48 Hour Film Project). It went really well, as has always been the case on Harry’s sets, and we finished the night at Old Chicago.
Tonight, I intend to stare at a television screen, drink wine, and do little else.
* Workhaus called me back! Callbacks are Thursday night. Woot!
