The crew of the Enterprise in the new Star Trek film, to be directed by J.J. Abrams, is quickly getting cast. Here’s the story (Thanks, Kat!):

They’re in talks with Chris Pine (who, incidentally, is the same age as me) to play Kirk, they still need a Christopher Pike (the captain of the Enterprise before Kirk), and they make no mention of Dr. McCoy, but the rest of the crew is cast. The main thing that caught my attention is that Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) is playing Scotty. Star Trek will be hilarious, apparently. Additionally, John Cho from Harold & Kumar is playing Sulu. Eric Bana is playing the villain.

If only I were a working actor in L.A. with an agent. I could’ve been in the young crew of the Enterprise. Star Wars, Spider-man, and Indiana Jones have passed me by. Now Star Trek. *sigh* I have no dreams left to chase.

Anyway, even though the executive producer and director of the new Star Trek film was one of the screenwriters of Armageddon, I have high hopes for the film. It’s sort of a prequel; it’s about the original crew of the Enterprise before the series. But the understanding is that it’s not just an earlier episode in the canon, but is a reimagining of the franchise, which is becoming a popular practice. My Trek fandom waned after the end of The Next Generation and the subsequent crappy films (First Contact excluded), but I’m excited about this one.
